Belated Bard Blog

What better way to set yourself up for 3 hrs of Shakespeare than a wonderful picnic from Granville Covered Market - and (many I not be struck down) vegetarian, too!

Then the scene was set for King Lear, not a play I knew but Mrs A summarised it in a simple way: 'dark, and they all die' (sorry if this is a spoiler).

In a tented theatre, and only feet from the cast, it is impossible to do justice to this production - it was simply as breath-taking as the wonderful RSC Loves Labours Found, which we saw at Stratford last year.

The entire cast was powerful, professional and mesmerising in performance. Benedict Campbell was a masterful, humorous, and captivating Lear; Michael Blake was a convincingly manipulative yet likeable antagonist. (http://bardonthebeach.org/2015/king-lear-play-cast). Three hours went in a heart beat, and we would have gladly sat through it again.

What a fantastic way to start our stay in Vancouver? And the world firework festival tomorrow - simply wow!
